The Basque separatist organisation ETA set off a car bomb at the Hipercor shopping centre on Avinguda Meridiana, Barcelona, Spain.

The bombing killed 21 people and injured 45, the deadliest attack in ETA’s history.

*ETA – Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (“Basque Homeland and Liberty” or “Basque Country and Freedom”), was an armed Basque nationalist and separatist terrorist organization in the Basque Country (in northern Spain and southwestern France).
